What is the Tall Ships Race?

The Tall Ships Race (TSR) is a sailing regatta occurring annually and arranged by Sail Training International (STI). All kinds of sailing ships from up to 30 different nations participate, among them many traditional tall ships. It is especially for young people, half of every crew must be under 25. What will happen during TSR ? Basically there are three big parts.

The Race

First of all are the actual races. Since naturally everyone wants to become first of his class, no ports are called. So it is pure sailing all day! On Aglaia the crew will be divided into three watches, every watch lasting 4 hours. The decks watch is sailing the ship (steering, trimming the sails, navigating), during that free watches are sleeping or taking care of pending works (cooking, cleaning).

Two times per day the current position of each vessel is announced by radio to the regatta management. They calculate the current rank of every ship within his class. That can also be seen on the internet. Special correction factors guarantee that also ships which are slower due to their design can win the race.

The TSR a sailing regatta, the engine will not be used. So if the wind is weak, there will be a chance for fishing or swimming. And to make sure that nobody gets into serious trouble at sea, the regatta is accompanied by navy ships with doctors on board.

The harbor parties

Crew Parade

In the ports of call a full party program is announced. First to be mentioned are the official events of the host city: crew parades where the teams present themselves to the present people, award ceremonies, big crew partys, sight seeing and sports events. Usually entries, tickets for the local traffic and other service's are for free.

Hafenfest

Of course people celebrate also on the ships. By inviting each other everybody can get to know the other sailors. And it's finally time to leave the harbour for the next trip, all ships sail out together in one big parade.

Cruise in Company

Between the races the ships are divided into groups which sail along different routes to the next regatta harbour. Usually they call smaller ports or they anchor in protected bays. So this is where one gets to see the countryside. And celebrating in the host harbours, swimming in around the anchoring ships or having a barbeque on the beach everybody will have a great time and a lot of time. And for those who want it is of course the opportunity for a crew change with other ships.
